A
transforming approach treats people with respect and addresses
the roots of violence
What
do we mean by ‘Transforming’?
‘Transformative’ strategies
are pro-active. They demonstrate:
- respect for all parties and openness
to all points of view
- faith in each person’s capacity
to make a contribution to the social good
- care for each person’s well-being
regardless of their behavior or role
- commitment to seeing the complexity
of situations
Transformative strategies take risks
to try something creative. And they cultivate hope.

What do
we mean by violence?
Our understanding of violence includes:
- direct violence (physical harm)
- emotional violence (for example, bullying,
hate speech, intimidation)
- structural violence (for example,
economic injustice, starvation, excessive power concentrated
in the hands of a few, human rights violations)
- cultural violence (for example, racism,
sexism, classism, oppression of children or elders)
- environmental violence (destruction
of the ecosystem that is necessary to sustain life)
