A transforming approach treats people with respect and addresses the roots of violence

What do we mean by ‘Transforming’?

‘Transformative’ strategies are pro-active. They demonstrate:

  • respect for all parties and openness to all points of view
  • faith in each person’s capacity to make a contribution to the social good
  • care for each person’s well-being regardless of their behavior or role
  • commitment to seeing the complexity of situations

Transformative strategies take risks to try something creative. And they cultivate hope.

What do we mean by violence?

Our understanding of violence includes:

  • direct violence (physical harm)
  • emotional violence (for example, bullying, hate speech, intimidation)
  • structural violence (for example, economic injustice, starvation, excessive power concentrated in the hands of a few, human rights violations)
  • cultural violence (for example, racism, sexism, classism, oppression of children or elders)
  • environmental violence (destruction of the ecosystem that is necessary to sustain life)
